Botanical facts: Native to Japan, China, and Taiwan. Named Pieris after the mythological Pierides (the Muses).
Design notes: The airy, graceful branches work beautifully as focal or line elements in minimalist arrangements. The cascading, bell-shaped flower racemes resemble tiny "pearls," adding delicate elegance to arrangements.
Purchasing hints: Select stems with glossy turgid foliage and full fresh clusters of flowers. Avoid stems with dropping blossoms.
Conditioning: Give the woody stem end a fresh break or cut with as sharp knife. Remove foliage that will be below the water line. Hydrate in water mixed with a commercial floral food for two hours before storage or usage.
Additional notes: The name "Andromeda" was originally given by botanist Carl Linnaeus, inspired by the mythological figure Andromeda, who was said to be chained to a rock—similar to how Pieris species grow in rocky, challenging environments in their native habitats.
