Gomphrena - Globe Amaranth

Availability: Summer and Fall

Vase life: As a fresh flower, 7 to 10 days. Flowers dry very well.

Storage temperatures: 36 - 41 degrees Fahrenheit for a short time. Does not store well.

Description: Round, clover-like flower heads that look like small globes. Each blossom is 1 to 2 inches wide and grows at the tips of the stems. The plant itself is upright and bushy, with multiple stems branching out.

Color: Orange, Pink, Purple, White

Botanical facts: Other related species used for grain. Many members of the amaranth family are considered weeds such as pigweed, tumbleweed and water hemp.

Design notes: The small, spherical flower blossoms of make Gomphrena an excellent accent, adding texture and contrast to larger blooms. Gomphrena is a favorite for floral designers looking to add vibrant color, lasting beauty, and texture to their creations.

Purchasing hints: Purchase when the blooms are open, but still bright, and the foliage is green and turgid.

Conditioning: Cut stem ends with as sharp knife. Hydrate in a solution of water and commercial floral food for two hours before storage or usage.

Additional notes: To use as dried flowers, strip leaves off stems and hang upside down to air dry. May also be preserved with glycerin.
