At Floral Design Institute, we're watching the evolution of flowers, and so often, we look to the past. Think about the heritage, the tussie-mussie, tussie being a cluster of flowers, mussie a bit of moss. Updated version, perfect for gifting today.
Let's start was the beautiful Juliet garden rose. They're from gardenrosesdirect.com. Beautiful peachy hue, very long-lasting, they open out to a beautiful cup. And they've all been hydrated and left to sit overnight so they're ready to be used. Then filling in with herbs, ranunculus and sweet peas.
As you start, you want to have one beautiful rose, maybe remove the leaves, and then just a few herbs to nestle around it. Then tucking in additional blooms, just keeping it tiny and sweet, and adding them in and filling as you go.
As I add the flowers, I think about facing each of the stems, so it gives maximum visual value, tucking them down very close together, adding in some of the thyme for beautiful fragrance, taking bits. And then coming back, a ranunculus, letting it be a tiny bit taller, maybe a second. Then adding a bit more mint and turning and double-checking that the balance is there, that it radiates from a central binding point, and each bloom shown to its full beauty.
As I finish, just adding a tiny bit more foliage to create a collar to visually support the blooms, and then for security, a few Galax leaves. They're so sturdy, leathery that they'll support the lower leaves of the mint and the thyme, giving it a little bit more structure, just turning and adding. And when the collar is in place, coming back with a bit of bind wire and lashing it together.
The recipe started with the three Juliet roses from gardenrosesdirect.com. Then I added in three ranunculus, five sweet peas, then half a bunch of thyme, half bunch of mint and 10 Galax leaves to collar. Sweet, fragrant, and fabulous.
The updated tussie-mussie, perfect for gifting or enjoy yourself. Just drop it in a vessel and enjoy. Even the sweetest, petite designs can be so fabulous.
